Über den Autor Herman Melville
1819 in New York geboren. Er stammte aus einer verarmten Kaufmannsfamilie. Er ging früh zur See und verdingte sich als Matrose, u.a. auf Walfängern. Seine Reisen führten ihn bis in die Südsee. 1844 kehrte er in die USA zurück, lebte, zunächst mit einigem Erfolg beim Publikum, als freier Schriftsteller in Massachusetts. Nach dem Misserfolg von Moby-Dick (1851) zog er sich weitgehend aus der literarischen Öffentlichkeit zurück. Von 1866 bis 1885 arbeitete er als Zollinspektor in New York, wo er nahezu vergessen 1891 starb.
