The AKIRA Hardcover Collection features the updated translation and lettering of the 35th Anniversary Edition box set, now collectible one book at a time. As in the box set, this six-volume version of the masterwork of Katsuhiro Otomo (Memories, Steamboy, Domu: A Child's Dream) features the creator's Japanese-language, hand-drawn sound effects and the original, right-to-left manga reading format in a 7"x10" casewrap hardcover.

Katsuhiro Otomo wurde 1954 in Miyagi geboren. Schon früh begann er sich für Filme, vor allem amerikanische Produktionen, zu interessieren. Mit 19 Jahren zog er nach Tokio und veröffentlichte noch im gleichen Jahr seinen ersten Comic, "Gun Report", eine Adaption von Prosper Mérimées "Mateo Falcone". Zahlreiche weitere Kurzgeschichten folgten, die später in mehreren Bänden nachgedruckt wurden - die besten davon erschienen auf deutsch in den beiden "Otomo"-Bänden. Der künstlerische wie kommerzielle Durchbruch gelang Otomo 1980 mit der Science Fiction-Geschichte "Domu" ("Das Selbstmordparadies"), die ihm den Großen Japanischen Science Fiction-Preis einbrachte, der zuvor nur für Romane vergeben worden war. Ab Dezember 1982 erschien schließlich in "Young Magazine" seine große Serie "Akira", die sowohl als Comic wie auch als Zeichentrickfilm große Popularität erlangte und in der westlichen Welt der Türöffner für viele weitere japanische Mangas und Animes wurde. Für den Zeichner Takumi Nagayasu schrieb Otomo in der Folgezeit die umfangreiche SF-Serie "Sarah", die ebenfalls bei CARLSEN COMICS erscheint und mit Band 14 seit dem Frühjahr 1999 komplett vorliegt.
